Review Notes: I love the JDN Antanos in general. I really love the Gran Reservas. The biggest difference is that the Gran Reservas are much darker and have less bite than the regular Antanos. These are strong, full bodied, cuban-esque style cigars. Earthy, musky, fermented tobacco flavor. Not for newcomers and not for those who like mild to med. bodied sticks. But if you like strong tobacco flavor that will almost knock you out - try these. I love them. Sip 'em and enjoy.

"Great line of cigars"

Review Notes: JDN does it again. A nice addition to a great line of smokes. Not the strength of the regular Antonio line, call it medium-full bodied. The price is a little much for this cigar, but certainly worthy of a spot in the 'dor.

"A great line, a not so great cigar"

Review Notes: As a big fan of Joya De Nicaragua in general, when this smoke was recommended to me by a respectable connoisseur at the best cigar shop I visited in Milwaukee, I snatched it up. I let it sit in the humi for at least a month before I finally decided to try it. But if well-aged means what I got here, I think I'll stick with young smokes. This is a very full-bodied, meaty cigar, which is never really my cup of tea, but it seemed particularly pungent and biting as I partook of it. It eventually settled down into a mostly respectable experience, but it just did not have the appeal of the other Joyas I've had in the past, with complex and delicate flavors and mild and enjoyable aromas.

"Overrated"

Review Notes: I saw this smoke in Cigar Aficianado's Top 25 of 2005 and decided to give it a try. Other than a rough cap, construction was solid and the cigar burned fairly well. The problem was it reeked of young tobacco. When I clipped off the cap there was quite a bit of light tobacco, some with a greenish tint. Given that I spent ~$10 on this smoke, I figured I'd light it up to see what the fuss was all about. It started off harsh for the first inch and settled down quite a bit after that, though I was never able to ditch hints of harshness from seemingly young tobacco. Flavor was decent, but the harshness overshadowed everything. Aftertaste reminded me of an Oliva Master Blends No.2. I can see why this brand has struggled to regain it's former glory. The stories of production problems seem to be true, at least in my case. I admit that I might've gotten a dud, per se, and that other batches might be better... so buyer beware. Feel free to try, but don't say you haven't been warned. My impression is that this smoke wants to be premium but isn't up to the task. I may try these again in the future, but I feel that the Oliva Master Blends No.2 is a better value... and a better smoke.

"Excellent, but.."

Review Notes: Overall I found it to be very similar to the regular Antano, but a little more refined with slightly better construction. I'd say technically this was worth the $8 I paid for it, but when the regular Antanos are just about as good at half the price.....well, you see where I'm going with this...
