Review Notes:
I had one of these gifted to me back, probably, in January. I've included it in my traveldor many times, but have never smoked it. A few of the FOGs that I know speak highly about La Floridita Maduros, so I've been interested in trying at least one.
It's a good looking stick: nice, dark, oily looking. There are a few veins here and there, but all in all it's a nice, presentable stick. Feeling the length of it, it feels pretty solid with no noticable soft spots. Using a cutter, I clipped off the end, and found the draw to be just about perfect; neither too loose or too tight. The pre-light flavor is what one would expect out of a maduro, being somewhat earthy, and very mildly sweet. Spaking up one with a match, it lights up real well, and the first few puffs tell me all I need to know. There's hardly any sweetness at all, having an earthy flavor, subtle notes of coffee and charcoal. Indeed, it has a rather unique profile, somewhat of a cross between an Onyx Reserve, and a Mayorga Maduro - both of which are among my favorites. All in all, the flavor of it is exceptionally well balanced right down the middle of both. You might also say that it had some licorice flavors, or even the flavor of dark chocolate / semi-sweet chocolate. The Famous description calls it a "beefy" cigar, which is pretty accurate. If you like a El Mejor Expresso, of a Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur maduro - something on the chocolately side of a maduro - this probably isn't the stick for you.
It burned fairly slow, produced ample amounts of smoke, but did need to be tended to somewhat frequently to prevent it from going out. The burn was Ok, but definately not razor-sharp; no "running", "canoeing", or "tunneling". The only real criticism of the cigar was that the ash was on the flaky side, so there'll be no winning any "nice ash" contests with this one. On a positive note, it remained cool all the way to the nub. There's lots of flavor going on there, but it's not a full-bodied cigar, so you won't go all loopy after you're done with it.
I suspect that it had been aging for at least a year. Even with that, it was in pretty good shape, and performed surprisingly well.
You can get these for under $40.00 a bundle.
Highly, highly recommend.
