Review Notes: An old saying about a farmer who was all show...and no substance. Opus x is fighting this battle...although full of peppery flaver...I expect a lot for $20...and didn't get it. I prefer the Padron 1926 or Davidoff Millenium for an ultra premium special occasion smoke...and I am a HUGE Hemingway/Don Carlos fan...but I couldn't justify the hype or the cash. No way, Jose...

Review Notes: Maybe I had a dud or it was aged wrong but the sample I had sucked and for the price I paid I'm pissed. As for specifics, the xXx was med. body w/ mild taste. Draw was rather tight and burn was uneven. But for all the hype, which drives the price of these to ridiculous levels, all I can think of is disappointment. I have 2 more in the coolador and I'll have to give it another try. Again, maybe I had a bad sample. For all the hyped up n/c cigars you might want to rethink about buying an Opus. Try the PAMs of any size or their cousins - the 1926s. They are also much hyped but worthy of the prestige.

Review Notes: These are beautifully rolled mild-medium but complex cigars. At list they are somewhat over priced but I can see buying some for special occasions when you don't want a really strong smoke. The inflated prices some places charge are a joke. Very nice construction, great ash, medium flavors at best. I see the resemblance somebody else found with the la aurora 100 anos. All in all an excellent little cigar. I'd love to have a few boxes of these sitting around.

"2nd Opinion"

Review Notes: I had one of these a while ago and was not very impressed. As a result, I shied away from Opus in general, thinking them overpriced and overhyped. That has actually not kept me from buying them. I have quite a few friends who think them the cat's meow and so whenever my local store, which sells them at MSRP, gets them in I stock up on them for gifts. You can't argue with the fact that they are exceedingly handsome and festive looking. Well last night I opened my humidor to select a stick for the evening and for some reason I just reached for one of these. And I am glad I did. What a difference from those that I've had in the past! Exceeding rich and smooth, dense clouds of smoke, a perfect burn, and some flavors that I have rarely if ever experienced in a cigar. Lots of fruit, like raisins and plums, but so smooth. An absolutely wonderful experience. I found myself almost cackling through the first 2/3 of the cigar. The final third, while still delicious, did not go in the direction that I expected. It got a little bit flat. However, it did not get at all tarry or harsh, which was a welcome change from a lot of other strong cigars. I have a good stock of these at this point. I think I'm going to have to find a different stick to start giving away. :)

"Hype and a magnificent band."

Review Notes: In 1977 I was one of the last of my friends to go and see a little movie called "Star Wars". Everyone told me how this film was amazing. I was told I would sit in awe, the sci fi masterpiece would change how I viewed all films to follow. It was good, but could not possibly live up to the hype. Let me just say that I have seen this film dozens of times since and I do think of it as a classic. That said, my experience with this widely praised stick was very similar. I was lucky enough to find a box of perfectos in my local tobacconists humidor and was elated. I bought several and placed them in my humidor. I sat on my deck and lit the first the first day. No aging for this one. The appearance was impressive. Nice wrapper, firm yet yeilding roll and fantastic band. The perfecto cut well and the pre-draw was firm but smooth and easy. The cap was well constructed and the expertise of the rollers was evident. Lighting was simple and perfectly even. Initial flavor was full, spicy and complex. I was struck almost immediately by the "ordinary" nature of this cigar. The 1st third went well, although a bit hot. Soon I encountered a rough spot and the burn became uneven and the draw tight. For me, things went downhill quickly. Problematic burn, finicky draw, tarry cap. I actually let it go out just past the half way point. I am not saying the smoke was bad, it just did not live up to my expectations at all. I can do as well with a Padron or Ashton for much less $. As with the movie, I may develop an appieciation over time, although I cannot imagine buying any more that I have already.
