Review Notes:
I like full bodied maduros. Of 40 cigars in regular rotation, about 12 are maduros. I noticed that 8 of these are Rocky Patel or Padron, so I wanted to do a comparison. Padron is a familiar reference for most cigar lovers. I rate by flavor, and probably my taste buds are not that good, as I can’t detect subtle flavors/adjectives like vanilla, etc, it’s good to great for me. For me a 7 is very good, an 8 is xlnt, and a 9 is great. Lots of cigars that get a 7 from other guys rate less than 7 for me. 6 means I don’t get it, maybe they have better taste buds than me.
The Padron 1964 is my benchmark for a great maduro, but at $10+ it’s a special occasion gar, I give it a 9.3 for flavor.. Start is a 10, and the flavor for entire remainder is a 9+, there’s no waiting for the sweet spot. To get a 9 in the1st, 2nd and last 3rd, it has to have a great flavor, which means tasty and complex (that’s the fanciest description I’m comfortable with). I would definitely suggest the big sizes, they don't cost that much more and you get a lot more cigar.
Here’s my ratings for all 8 in my shootout, which are also reviewed in their own category: Padron 1964 = 9.3, RP Decade = 9.3, RP Olde Worlde Maduro = 9.0, Padron Maduro = 8.5, RP Edge Maduro = 8.0, RP Fusion MM = 7.7, Indian Tabac Super Fuerte Maduro = 7.5, Indian Tabac Maduro = 7.3.
These cigars were in the humi for nearly 2 months, so a fair comparison. I will see how aging helps them with another look at the 6 month mark.
