Review Notes: Displayed in rustic wooden boxes that touted the fact that these cigars were made from 100% legal Cuban tobacco from 1958 these cigars looked interesting, so for $10.85 I rolled the dice. Wearing no band, the cigar was medium dark with a few tiny light and dark irregularities on the wrapper. It had a wobbly, careless roll and showed some microscopic tooth and the hint of bloom. The cigar showed very dense bunching, and it crushed before yielding to the cutter causing a bit of damage to the cap. A papery aroma and prelight taste of dusty straw said that it might have been old tobacco, but no telltale Habanos scent came through. The cigar crackled a bit under the match, like dry kindling. The flavor was dry and it developed a bad runner out of the gate. The raw flavor was laced with turpentine, with some tannin reminiscent of dry oak leaves, and the slight harshness carried over to the astringent finish. The cigar had a decent draw and the medium gray ash showed signs of booking in the pattern. Some small flakes dropped from the edge as it burned, and then the whole thing fell off at the one inch mark. There was no real complexity to this smoke; it tasted like a mediocre Honduran. Sitting in the afternoon sun, I had a nice time listening to the birds while I contemplated the ordinary nature of this cigar. Medium full bodied, it emitted heavy, dense smoke and an inviting aroma that was sweet and alluring, but sadly the aroma was the best part of the cigar. The burn evened out one third of the way, but the flavor never developed any kind of character at all and I never detected any sense of power. No buzz whatsoever. My overall impression was that this cigar was brash and flat like an out of tune trumpet. Iíve had better experiences and similar profiles with Bolivar Fuertes. Itís hard to believe that this is Cuban tobacco. It reminded me of an early Scorpions album, trying hard but singing phonetically Ė no real feeling. I left the second half in the ashtray as a monument to its mediocrity. Not recommended.
