Review Notes:
I agree 100% with Mackson, I have NEVER smoked a Don Alejandro (98-08) that hasn't ranked in my top 10 cigars EVER. To be clear, I have smoked somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 Dons from 12-15 boxes, and they always battle the 'best' Monte #2's and Siglo VI's for my favorite cigar. Not the mention the VR Famosos is probably in my top 5 too. Now there is no doubt that these cigars do get even better with age -- as difficult as that may seem. However, regardless of the year, the construction and appearance is 95% of the time the Best of the Best! The wrappers are particularly incredible -- milk chocolate in color and some of the smoothest cuban tobacco wrappers of any cigar out there. I'm also usually blown away on how good the draw is for a cigar of this size (not too loose, but so easy and smooth).
Onto the smoke itself....the older the Don the smoother the overall flavors, which include honey, spice and chocolate, with hints of coffee, almonds and cherry. These complex flavors change throughout this roller coaster of a smoke with a full and satisfying finish. I honestly cannot understand some the reviewers who consider this cigar's flavor as average or worse. I've had all the great Double Coronas (Partagas, Punch, Cohiba, Ramon and Hoyo) and cigar after cigar, the Don beats them all every time. To be fair, the Hoyo and Partagas come close, but they're nowhere near as consistent as the Don. In the end, try the Don -- you won't regret it -- and if you do, I will gladly take the rest of your box off your hands! Enjoy!!
