Review Notes: A luscious looking golden caramel colored cigar with a lovely embossed band of shining gold, this cigar looked as smooth as silk. Almost no visible veining on this tissue paper thin and very fragile Ecuadorian wrapper. Some splitting of the cap because of the fragile wrapper, but the pre-light draw was smooth and easy. Just a hint of green grassiness in the pre-draw flavor. The first puffs revealed a mild to medium honduran flavor, with grass, earth, and the slightly evergreen pine taste common to some Honduran blends. The aroma was light and wafted on the breeze with lighter notes of tobacco and the pleasant scent of singed hay. The ash was a work of art, light in color and growing to a solid, alarmingly long tube before requiring a soft tap at the halfway mark. A pleasant and woody finish left a bit of dryness, but lingered nicely. The new blend Larranaga delivered a very nice Honduran cigar profile, but was much less strong than the typical Villazon interpretation. Smooth, with just a hint of dryness, the flavor built slowly, yet never got north of medium strength. The burn was even and slow making for an enjoyable experience. The last Dominican version of the Por Larranaga was like sucking air through a furnace filter. While they has similarly fine construction, the dry, dusty, and largely flavorless cigar gave the non-Cuban version of this cigar a bad name in the eyes of many. While no powerhouse, the new blend should establish itself as a decent mild to medium Honduran smoke.
