Review Notes: Typical Gurkha. Out of three sticks one will be fantastic two will be average. Saturday afternoon's DM was average. Uneven, aggravating burn and a one dimensional "funky" drab maduro flavor (as Merlyn experienced) I see these are up to $5-6 a throw now. They can be worth it just tread cautiously. You should be able to get them at auction (as I did) for about $4 a throw.

"The ups and downs of Gurkha"

Review Notes: Looked and smoked like a champ but this stick lacked the sweet maduro richness that composed the flavor profile of my first Gurkha Doble Maduro. I found this second cigar to be ordinary at best in it's flavor. The cigar came out of the exact same package as the first. This brings me to the point of my review. I find that Gurkha with their limited or seasonal productions like the Doble Maduro, the Boer, and the Ltd. Exp. Series are a bit inconsistent. I've smoked 2 or 3 cigars in each of the aforementioned lines and one will be excellent the other ordinary. Is this the price that we pay as consumers for the niche that Gurkha is carving out in the cigar industry with their limited production of boutique cigars? I'd suspect that in using small select batches of "special" tobacco Gurkha has limited its ability to establish consistent blending of its cigars within the same lines. If you continually keep making different cigars from different batches how can you be consistent within those batch lines? However, in closing, I must praise Gurkha for endeavoring to be different. When Gurkha is good it is excellent. When bad they are still better than most. Just be prepared to experience those ups and downs. (the $3 I paid for the "ordinary" Doble Maduro was still a good value)

"Rich, sweet, mild, maduro."

Review Notes: Found this heavy well packed cigar to be somewhat mild to the fringe of medium in body (I like med. to fringe of full) and very, very, sweet tasting. Similar to a Romeo y Juliet maduro. However, unlike the RyJ maduro, the sweetness was tempered nicely by notes of spice and cocoa making it somewhat rich in its' flavor profile. Burn was slightly uneven but self correcting. Draw was too tight for first half even with massaging and poking. Thankfully, the wrapper was tough and held up to my attempts to loosen up the draw. Draw finally improved in the second half. I could see these cigars becoming a morning maduro or a sweet afternoon change of pace for veteran smokers and a nice after dinner cigar for those still finding their cigar niche. I'd lay 10 or so of these down now in your box while they can be scored cheaply. They are good now but I feel they have some wonderful characteristics (densely packed and rich flavors) to become fantastic with aging. Overall, this pleasant, relaxing, change of pace cigar lasted about an hour and 40 minutes. I nabbed a 10 pack on c-bid for $28. At $2.80 a throw an excellent value. At the MSRP of $4 a solid value.
