Review Notes: I pulled out a cigar tonight which I had smoked a few months ago as an experiment, and thoroughly enjoyed the cigar, to the point that I bought several 5 packs the next week. Thus, it was time to see if I made a wise investment. However, the Vegas de Fonseca Sobrino is hardly a gamble since I won them up on an auction for $7 a five pack and it was the #14 cigar of the Cigar Aficionado Top 25 with a rating of 91 in 2004. However, is this the same cigar, or are the tobaccos the same quality of 4 years ago? We shall see! Its Cameroon wrapper is aged in palm bark known as tercios and it is a very nice color, well constructed cigar, firm with a few veins but nothing distracting. The first taste was creamy, rich in flavor but very mild. It was light on the pallet with an almost buttery appeal. Further into the cigar, some nuttiness was noticed in the background along with hint of sweetness but was very well balanced. During the second stage some woodiness arrived with a little kick of pepper in a pocket or two. The burn was consistent with no need of adjustments and the ash was thick and gray with a fall about every 1 ½ inches. Although the draw was a little tight, it posed no problems or annoyance. During the last stage, the strength picked up a bit and I did notice some grass or hay in several draws and a little of the Cameroon twang, but these were underlying tones against the overall flavors of cream, nuts and some spice. After toasting my fingers, it was done, and as my pallet rested a nice finish of an almost a chocolate taste appeared. This isn’t a cigar for those who love a multidimensional, complex, and power packed smoke, but rather prefer a smooth, creamy, steady, mild to medium, rich flavored cigar at a fantastic price. A 91? Not this individual cigar, but good enough to be in the high 80’s. I have never found this type value for $1.40 a cigar? My recommendation; Buy a bunch!
