Review Notes:
This is a Holt's blend, done by Pepin Garcia and produced in Nicaragua. I picked up a box of these back in March, during a special that included a 5 pack of Robustos with every box purchase. As the box purchased was Robustos as well, it came out to be 30 sticks for about $105.
The dark Corojo wrapper is invitingly oily and lightly veined. The construction suffers from a few bumps here and there, but this doesn't seem to affect the burn or draw. Over the course of a box plus, burn has been pretty consistently good, and draw slightly less so, with a handful being a bit tighter than I prefer. Most of the latter were in the first month, so it's probably safe to say that once stabilized in your humidor, it shouldn't be an issue.
The initial light brings with it a blast of pepper. Within 1/4", that settles down to a pleasant light spiciness with a subtle, leathery finish. If you are one who can manage it, send some smoke out via the nostrils. You'll be rewarded with a pleasant little noze buzz.
At the 1/3 point, the smoke takes on a chewier character. From there on out, the flavor and punch build nicely, but there are no significant changes. More than most, I find this smoke rewards patience and punishes haste-- don't over puff.
I suppose I titled this "Old Reliable" because I found it to be a consistently pleasant (if not earth -shattering) smoke. At about $4 a stick, I think it's worth keeping a box on hand.
