2004 Carlos Torano Tribute 5 X 50

Wrapper: 5 year old Costa Rican Broadleaf Maduro

Filler: Nicaraguan and Dominican

Storage: 63 – 65 RH at 63 – 68 F.

Construction: Beautiful oily dark walnut brown nearly oscuro wrapper with two smaill veins. Insanely solid roll – like a rock. Clipped clean.

Prelight: Nutty, earthy aroma like black walnuts (wife agreed), cedar, and dark tobacco. Sweet wood, earth and black walnuts. Very firm draw.

Burn: Lit evenly, razor sharp burn until the last ¼, then 1 minor touch up Off-white ash tinged with charcoal grey.

Drink: Starbucks Frappucino.

Smoking Notes: Initial impression and the first third of the cigar is a very smooth medium-full, thick, oily and creamy smoke with flavors of bitter-sweet chocolate, heavy roast espresso, earth, and some nuttiness around a core of very smooth, dark, woody tobacco. The finish marked by notes of wood, cedar and a light black pepper spiciness. The aroma is earthy, very sweet, nutty with a hint of cedar, and distinctly reminiscent of black walnuts (again noted by my wife). The draw was a bit firm at first, but loosened quickly to perfection as it warmed. By the mid-point, the cigar has turned even “darker” with very heavy earth, espresso, leather, and bitter-sweet chocolate around a core of sweet heavy tobacco. The black pepper noted on the finish have also “kicked it up a notch” and added some dense cedar. At ¾ the cigar shifts to a distinctly medium smoke that’s very cedary with nice earthy undertones. Far from a disappointment, this was a very nice counterpoint. Had the cigar continued on its “dark” trend I think it would have turned bitter. An excellent hour and a half smoke.

Overall Impression: An incredible cigar that obviously aged quite well. Easily in the top 20 I’ve smoked this year. The heavy roast, slightly charry flavor of the Starbucks complimented nicely. Thanks to SmokinAFuente on the CW forum. I’m getting a box – or 2. I rate this heavy maduro a big beautiful A++.
