A review of two La Flor Dominicana cigars: the Double Ligero Lancero Cameroon and the Cameroon Cabinet No. 5
Hello once again! Today we will review two offerings from La Flor Dominicana: the Double Ligero Lancero Cameroon and the Cameroon Cabinet No. 5. Before we get into the cigars themselves, let’s take a peek into the manufacturer behind their production.
La Flor Dominicana is a boutique-style brand has quite an interesting back story. The company was founded amidst the 90’s cigar boom, more specifically in 1996, by Litto Gomez. Gomez has had his share of bad luck, most notably prior to his entry into the cigar business, when he made a living as a jeweler. It was an armed robbery at his Miami jewelry store that caused Gomez to try his hand in another industry. Luckily for many enthusiasts, he chose cigars as his calling.
Starting in the Dominican Republic under the name Los Libertadores, Gomez’ upstart company had its share of growing pains, as most do. However, with the help of his wife Ines, the two teamed up to learn as much as they could about the business and after much trial and error and following the lead of some of the industry’s veterans, they achieved success. Gomez changed the name to La Flor Dominicana, translated the Dominican flower, after the flower of the tobacco plant, which, when present, signifies that the plant is ready to reproduce.
The company has expanded significantly over time, escalating production from only 300,000 cigars to nearly three million in 2006 at its factory located in Tamboril, Dominican Republic. La Flor Dominicana is known for its diversity, producing a wide variety of medium to full-bodied cigars, and its founder received praise from Cigar Aficionado for his innovation in the creation process. Those who want some inspiration to push through hard times need to look no further than Mr. Gomez, who experienced, in addition to the aforementioned jewelry store robbery, a massive fire at his factory that resulted in the loss of about 400,000 cigars. Talk about some bad luck!
