The Red Label No. 1 gives off a solid first impression thanks to its very smooth and oily reddish-brown wrapper. The pigtail cap is very neat as well. Hardly any veins are noticeable. The cigar does have some give when touched, but I wouldn't call it soft. The decorative band near the head displays the Viaje logo in red, beige, and gold, as well as the Fifty Fifty name. Before lighting, the cigar has an earthy flavor and gives off a scent of cedar.
There are no complaints to report when it comes to the Fifty Fifty Red Label's burn. The draw is excellent, and the gray ash is solid. Only one minor touch-up is needed. The cigar stays lit on its own too.
The Red Label No. 1 may not be the most flavorful cigar on the market, but it does hold its own. The first third offers cedar and tasty cinnamon. The second third continues with the cinnamon, which is eventually gives way to cocoa and leather. Strength picks up a tad in the final third, with notes of pepper.
Overall, the Fifty Fifty Red Label No. 1 was an enjoyable cigar. The presentation was solid, and so was the construction and burn. For a medium-bodied smoke, there was a good amount of flavor. Still, at around $9 per single, the Red Label No.1 did not do enough to win me over. I'm not saying its not a quality cigar, because it is. At that price point, however, I expect a little more. Regardless, if you are a Viaje fan or enjoy Nicaraguan puros, give the Red Label a shot. If you are looking to try more than a single, you can find it in packs of five or boxes of 25.
The Viaje Fifty Fifty Red Label No. 1 earns a rating of 3.25 out of four stars.
