Ready for more cigar reviews of recent releases?  Well here they are in the form of the AVO Limited Edition 2014 AVO 88 and the Leccia Luchador.

AVO Limited Edition 2014 AVO 88

AVO continued its tradition of releasing limited edition cigars to celebrate founder Avo Uvezian’s birthday this March when they launched the AVO 88.  For a full background on the cigar, here’s what the official press release had to say:

“The AVO Limited Edition 2014 celebrates the extraordinary 88th birthday of cigar legend, Avo Uvezian. Avo’s deep fascination with numerology gains full exposure with the number 8. Not only does 88 represent the hallmark anniversary Avo Uvezian is celebrating but also the number of keys on a grand piano. Thus, the piano keyboard is the “key” inspiration for Avo’s 2014 Limited Edition – “AVO 88”.

Avo Uvezian’s pursuit to compose the perfect blend for his 88th birthday cigar began several years ago. The goal was to compose a cigar that encapsulated an exciting and perfect balance of flavors and strength that is the foundation of every great musical composition. When Avo explained the objective to Master Blenders, Henke Kelner and Eladio Diaz, they were determined to successfully achieve Avo’s challenge. The ideal tobaccos were selected, the beautiful Belicoso format was chosen, and years of passionately fine-tuning the blend followed. Finally, the dedication to perfection from this legendary trio of cigar composers resulted in a Dominican Puro cigar that will be celebrated by connoisseurs throughout the ages.”

Here’s what AVO brand manager Scott Kolesaire had to say about the release:

“The AVO 88 is the culmination of AVO Limited Editions, a true masterpiece that will be celebrated by AVO fans for years to come.  For years Avo has been expressing his excitement towards the 88 cigar and is thrilled to finally share it with connoisseurs around the world.”

With that out of the way, let’s jump into the review.

The AVO 88 comes in a 6 x 52 Belicoso format.  As mentioned in the intro, it’s a Dominican puro.  Five different Dominican tobaccos make up the filler.  The binder consists of a limited Dominican Olor and Criollo leaf, and a Dominican Yamasa wrapper completes the composition.

Looking at the AVO 88, I can tell that this is a premium cigar.  Its Belicoso format is done to perfection, and the oily, chocolate brown wrapper is as smooth as can be.  There are a few minor veins and no major imperfections.  The cigar feels firm in my hand and has no soft spots.  The top decorative band displays the AVO logo, while the one beneath it showcases the AVO 88 moniker over some piano keys.  There’s a pre-light aroma of chocolate, while the cold taste is on the spicy side.

After lighting the AVO 88 with ease, the cigar burns perfectly.  The draw is just right and produces a ton of smoke.  No touch-ups or re-lights are needed.  The ash is solid and gray in color.  Smoking time caps out at around 75 minutes.
