Today’s cigar reviews will cover two stogies from one brand: Roberto Duran Cigars.  Now let’s take a closer look at what the Azan White Premium and the Azan Burgundy have to offer.

Azan White Premium Robusto

Roberto Duran Cigars made its debut as a brand at last year’s IPCPR show.  Here’s a background on the brand’s founder, Roberto Pelayo Duran, as described in the official press release:

“Roberto Pelayo Duran began his life’s work in his homeland of Havana, Cuba where tobacco grabbed a hold of him, and never let go. Supervising the production of cigar manufacturing in Cuba was only the beginning as he later went on to assemble and manage distribution of all Cuban cigar brands for Asia and Canada for The Pacific Cigar Company Ltd. Most recently, he contributed to the new global brand marketing strategy for Dunhill Cigars as a consultant. Roberto’s new venture gives him the platform to introduce a brand of cigars that offer the same quality, construction, and detail which he exceeded from those he supervised while in Cuba.”

While that gives you a glimpse into the life of Duran, here’s a glimpse into the factory behind his brand’s output:

“Roberto has assembled a unique combination of well-known, talented, and well-traveled cigar professionals which is combination of a wrapper plantation in Ecuador and a boutique factory which focuses entirely on quality. This factory boasts only 20 couples that produce medium to full flavor cigars, with a very classic approach and excellent quality. Their craftsmanship is unrivalled and the small team allows for consistent superior quality monitoring.”

Last, but not least, here’s a look at the brand’s first pair of lines that fall under the name Azan:

“Azan is one of the biggest kept secrets in the history of the Cuban cigar brands. Azan is particularly unique as it is the only Cuban cigar brand ever founded by Chinese immigrants.  In 1928, Kwan Ben Sen (Domingo Azan) and his brothers, starting producing handmade cigars in Manicaragua, province of Villa Clara in Cuba.  With the traditional Oriental dedication, focus and with a strike of good fortune, Domingo Azan was able to build one of the most successful tobacco brands in the center region of Cuba.”

Now that you have an idea of what’s behind the Azan lines, it’s time to take a look at the Azan White Premium.

The Azan White Premium Robusto measures 4 7/8 x 50.  It also comes in two other sizes: the 5 ½ x 52 Robusto Extra and the 5 ½ x 52 Campana.  The cigar begins with a filler of Nicaraguan Jalapa and Esteli tobaccos, as well as Brazilian Mata Fina leaf.  The binder is Nicaraguan, and the wrapper is Ecuadorian Corojo.

As you can tell by its name, the Azan White Premium is the brand’s “fanciest” offering, and the cigar definitely gives off that vibe with its appearance.  It has a smooth, chocolate brown wrapper with a few medium sized veins.  There’s a good amount of oil on the surface, and I detect zero imperfections.  The band near the head displays the Azan name in gold cursive, and the gold accents and white colors of the band blend in nicely with the wrapper.  This Robusto feels firm to the touch, and it has a sweet cold taste and aroma prior to lighting.

The Azan White Premium Robusto lights with ease and has a great draw.  Tons of smoke comes out of each puff and the ash is solid and gray and in color.  Only a couple of minor touch-ups are needed.  No re-lights.  Smoking time is just over an hour.
