Toraño gets an A-plus for the Cameroon Robusto’s presentation. The cigar comes in a cedar sheath and has two decorative bands that help spice up its appearance. The top band displays the Toraño logo, while the one beneath it showcases the 1916 label. The cigar itself has a nice chocolate brown color. The wrapper is somewhat oily with a few medium-sized veins. There are no true soft spots to be found, but the cigar does have some give when pinched. Before lighting, a woody/cedar aroma and a sweet cold taste are enticing.
Once lit, the 1916 Cameroon Robusto exhibits solid burn qualities. The draw is a little tight, but that’s the only negative mark. The ash is white and solid, and the burn remains even from beginning to end.
As far as the cigar’s flavor is concerned, I’d call it enjoyable, but not complex. It is as smooth as advertised, so fans of medium-bodied smokes should find it right up their alley. Sweet and creamy describe the first third. The strength gets a boost in the second third, as mild pepper appears. A nutty caramel flavor also pops in here and there that I wish was more dominant. The final third continues with more pepper and some wood.
Is the 1916 Cameroon Robusto a Toraño worth purchasing? Definitely. It may not be the most complex cigar you’ll find, and it may not be the best Toraño has to offer, but it does offer an enjoyable smoking experience. If you enjoy Cameroon-wrapped sticks or smooth sticks in general, add the Cameroon Robusto to your list. At around $5 per single, it’s a good value. You can also pick it up in packs of five or boxes of 25. Keep a few handy for a weekend golf outing or when you want to have a smoke while mowing the lawn. Also, it’s worth noting that this cigar can be tad dry, so you should definitely keep a beverage within reach.
The Carlos Toraño 1916 Cameroon Robusto earns a rating of 3.25 out of four stars.
