cohiba-xv Cohiba and Partagas are the brands of focus for today’s pair of reviews. Do the Cohiba XV 550 and the Partagas Spanish Rosado Mitico have what it takes to make it into your humidor? Read more to find out.

Cohiba XV 550

The Cohiba XV, or Extra Vigoroso, is a Dominican line from the popular brand that is advertised as being its most full-bodied selection, so you can see how the name fits it well. The Cohiba XV was created by Daniel Nuñez and is produced in limited quantities and also carries a hefty price tag. Is it worth that price tag? Let’s light up a XV 550 and see.

Measuring 5 x 50, the Cohiba XV 550 is just one of five sizes in the line. Other sizes in the line include the 6 x 45 645, 6 x 52 652, 6 x 60 660, and the 7 x 49 749. The cigar’s filler is a blend of Dominican Piloto Cubano Ligero and Nicaraguan Ligero tobaccos. The binder is Connecticut Broadleaf that has been aged for three years, while the wrapper is Ecuadorian Sun Grown Sumatra that has been aged for 3 ½ years total. As mentioned, the Cohiba XV is said to be full-bodied.

The Cohiba XV 550 offers up a solid first impression. The dark chocolate colored wrapper is very oily. Some minor veins are visible, but no major imperfections. The cigar feels firm to the touch and lacks soft spots. The decorative band near the head displays the Cohiba name and Extra Vigoroso label over a black, gold, and maroon color scheme. I sense a spicy scent and flavor prior to lighting that have me prepped for a rather strong smoke.

I’ve rarely had burn issues with Dominican Cohibas in the past. Luckily, the same holds true with the XV 550. It has a tight draw at first that eventually loosens up and becomes just right. The ash is solid and gray in color. Smoking time is over an hour. No touch-ups or re-lights are needed.
