Davidoff Millennium Collection
A Bit of Good News
All Pages

10 years later seemed like a good time to revisit the millennium.  We all remember the Y2K scares along with the plethora of millennium cigars that were released.  One of the most heralded releases was the Davidoff Millennium Collection.  These cigars eventually morphed into the regular release of the Davidoff Millennium Series.  The Davidoff Millennium Collection was produced in a limited number of 2500 boxes.  All the cigars in the collection were perfectos, including four Davidoff Millennium I Double Coronas, eight Davidoff Millennium II Churchill, and eight Davidoff Millennium III Coronas.  Each set also came with a certificate of authenticity, signed by Dr. Ernst Schneider, and Hendrik Kelner.

When first released, these puppies cost a bunch…then again they are from Davidoff, the same people that insist on wearing the tuxedos at the annual IPCPR conventions.  The box was gorgeous, and thusly I fell for the marketing and bought two boxes.  I ended up smoking a few, and then putting the boxes away into the back of the humidor.  A few months ago I came across them, and figured now was a good time to see how they have aged.

Imagine my surprise where upon doing a Google search, I found boxes of these cigars selling for over $4000.  It was lucky I saw this after smoking them.  If I had seen this before lighting the cigars up, I may never have put flame to cigar.  Since I did smoke them again, I might as well sure my thoughts.  I may never crack open that second box after seeing that price.

Looking back at notes from soon after I purchased the cigars, I found them stronger and spicier than your average Davidoff Thousands series, and frankly a nice change from the average Davidoff mild profile.  With the new found flavor and robustness, it’s no wonder these cigars made their way into the mainstream of the Davidoff line up.  All cigars in this collection had the same tobacco makeup, consisting of an Ecuadorian wrapped Perfecto with Dominican binder and filler.

The question is whether or not these beautiful cigars aged like the Mona Lisa or Joan Rivers?  For this un-scientific experiment I smoked one of each size cigar over a one week period.  I also looked back at some of my prior comments on the cigar, and compared and contrasted my thoughts from 10 years ago vs. my thoughts from my recent experience.

The good news is that the cigars are slightly better.  All of the flavors I’d seen earlier have blended nicely over the decade long slumber.  I was expecting them to have completely mellowed out, but was happily surprised to find out that they still maintained they’re bite.  The rich Dominican flavors were still present along with the spicy relevance of the Ecuadorian wrapper.  If I had written this review before I saw the outrageous price people were trying to get for the cigar I’d say it had matured into a world class representation of a Davidoff cigar.  I suppose if you throw price of the question, this is absolutely a joy to smoke after 10 years.

Surprisingly sitting in a humidor for 10 years has done no harm to the construction, seems to have blended the flavors advantageously, and offered a glimpse into the fact that find tobaccos can age as well as fine wines.

It should be no surprise that the smaller ring gauge versions of the cigar packed a bit more punch in their limited size.  Although the ample length of all three of these cigars (8 ¾ x 50, 7 ¼ x 48, 6 1/8 x 43) allowed for the smoking experience to last well over 90 minutes.  There were no construction issues with any of the cigars I smoked.  In fact the consistency I experienced in every one of the cigars was absolutely amazing.  I can’t claim to know the effects age has on construction, but if the cigars are any indication that tobacco must tend to relax and allow for a perfect draw and a consistent burn.

Since I’ve only been smoking cigars for about 15 years, I haven’t had a lot of opportunities to compare cigars after a decade long slumber.  I can see where this could be an addictive comparison, as it sure was fun looking back at my notes from 10 years ago and comparing them to my experience as of today.  This is definitely encouraged me to go digging to the cigar humidor for any other lost treasures.  I highly suggest you do the same, and if you come across some of the Davidoff Millennium Collection, it will be well worth your time digging.
