A review of the Don Ramon 660N (Natural)

Construction Comments: Well-rolled, firm and solid with no blemishes and tiny veins. This cigar is constructed very well. The Don Ramon 660 N has a tan colored silky wrapper.

Pre-light Aroma and Flavor: Flavors of tobacco, cedar and leather. A nice easy draw. 

Burn: There was no breeze in the cool morning air by the pool, so I used an old-fashioned plastic Bic lighter to toast the foot and light up. The Don Ramon lit flawlessly with a perfect straight burn and solid white ash.

Drink: Water

Smoking Notes: Most of the time, a cigar with a “Connecticut” wrapper is anticipated to be mild and light on taste. While this is a mild cigar, it does have a nice taste. I would say it is about twice as strong as the ever-popular Macanudo. The first ash lasted a full 2 inches. Impressive. You get some good flavors of cedar, leather, nutmeg and cinnamon, which grow more flavorful as the smoke progresses.

Overall Experience and Rating: Right away I was pleasantly surprised with this cigar. Yesterday, after a hearty lunch I smoked and reviewed the Maduro version and was only mildly impressed. I usually prefer Maduros over Naturals, but in this case I like the Natural Don Ramon better.

Both cigars are flawlessly constructed, burn perfectly and hold a long ash. However, I received more flavor from the natural over the maduro. This is an interesting lesson about cigar smoking and cigar reviews.

You must realize that there are some variables at play that affect one’s smoking experience. I anticipated the maduro to be full-bodied and smoked it after a hearty lunch expecting a powerful flavor to come through, which didn’t.

I expected the Natural to be very mild with little flavor and smoked it after a moderate breakfast of Grits with cheddar cheese. (The Southerners in the audience will appreciate grits, and the rest of you may be scratching your head.)

Anyway, for me, more flavor came through in the Don Ramon 660 N (Natural), than the 660 M (Maduro).

On a 1 to 10 scale I give The Don Ramon 660 N a 6.5.
