Taking a look at the Rocky Patel Fifty, the most noticeable physical aspect of the cigar is its neatly done box-pressed shape. The wrapper has a nice dark chocolate color and is a bit oily with some medium veins running throughout its body. Two bands decorate the body. The band at the foot displays the “50” name, while the one near the head showcases the Rocky Patel name and logo. The primarily orange and gold color scheme looks good against the dark wrapper. Prior to lighting, the cigar has an aroma of sweet spice and a chocolaty cold taste that do a good job of awaking my senses. Also noticeable is that it feels very firm to the touch and appears to have superb construction. This is no surprise, as other Rocky Patel smokes that I have tried in the past exhibited similar qualities.
Once lit, the Rocky Patel Fifty Robusto performs solidly. The burn is even and requires no touch-ups. A solid dark gray ash is produced and the draw is just right. There's plenty of smoke produced and the cigar stays lit on its own until the very end. I have zero complaints in this department.
The flavors experienced while smoking the Fifty Robusto are very complex and varied. The predominant flavor that kicks things off and stays until the end is of nuts. You also get a good dose sweet spice that was detected prior to lighting. A rich chocolate flavor appears in the first third and also pops up in the final third. Just a bit more sweet spice is noticed in the second third, and some earth combines wood and cedar for an entertaining midway point. The final third adds a touch of espresso that is a nice difference maker. This cigar is definitely packed with flavor and seems to fall somewhere between medium and full-bodied, as promised.
There is not much to complain about when it comes to the Rocky Patel Fifty. The burn is good. The flavors are complex and should satisfy those who prefer full-flavored cigars. Experienced smokers and fans of the Rocky Patel brand will definitely want to pick up at least a single of the Fifty. The price of a single hovers around $20 each, which is quite expensive and keeps it from being a frequent smoke for most. It also comes in boxes of 20 or packs of five. The Fifty is very limited, with only 2,000 boxes per size being produced. Don’t delay if you plan on picking one up, or you may miss out on a terrific stogie. It’s a great smoke for a special occasion, and also would make a great gift.
The Rocky Patel Fifty earns a rating of four out of four stars.
