When looking at the Hoyo de Tradicion, the temptation to light it immediately is hard to resist. Its slightly reddish Rosado wrapper has a bit of an oily sheen and hardly has any veins that are visible to the naked eye. It appears to be constructed to perfection, and the cigar has a box-pressed shape as well. The decorative band near the head has a vintage look. It displays the Hoyo de Monterrey and Hoyo de Tradicion names. The cigar feels firm to the touch, and it has no soft spots whatsoever. Prior to lighting, its scent and cold taste are reminiscent of mild tobacco.
Although it looks superb, once it's finally lit, the burn of the Hoyo de Tradicion is not perfect. It never gets completely out of hand, but there are touch-ups that are necessary. It also tends to need a re-light here and there. The draw is quite good, and the ash is long and light gray in color.
The flavors experienced while smoking the Hoyo de Tradition are varied and enjoyable. The cigar is also as smooth as promised. It begins with some sweet and nutty notes that characterize the first third. The second third offers up some wood and cedar. The final third is a blend of sweetness and mild spice.
While I was not blown away from this smoke, I cannot say it was not enjoyable. It's a good looking cigar that offers decent complexity. The burn was not perfect, but it was manageable. If you like smooth cigars, you will probably enjoy the Hoyo de Monterrey Hoyo de Tradicion. Beginning smokers should also have no problem handling this cigar. If you are looking for something with a powerful kick, look elsewhere. A single sells for about $6, which is not bad when you consider the cigar's quality. It also comes in boxes of 25.
The Hoyo de Monterrey Hoyo de Tradicion earns a rating of 3.25 out of four stars.
