Today’s cigar reviews on Puff.com are all about highly-rated cigars.  Are the Fernando Leon Family Reserve and the Asylum Premium 2012 Vintage 44x4 worthy of their lofty reputations?  Keep reading to find out.

Fernando Leon Family Reserve Belicoso

Guillermo Leon produced the Fernando Leon Family Reserve in honor of his father.  The cigar was reportedly a “secret” blend of Fernando Leon which was only made available to his friends and family, until Guillermo decided to release it to the public.  That move has apparently paid off, as the cigar has secured very high ratings and was named one of the top stogies for 2013.

I’ll be smoking the Belicoso format of the Family Reserve line for this review, which measures 6 1/8 x 52.  There are four other formats in the line, including the Robusto, Corona, Corona Gorda, and the Gran Toro.  The cigar’s filler is made up of an interesting blend of tobaccos from Brazil, Peru, and the Dominican Republic.  The binder is Dominican, and so is the wrapper, but of the Corojo-Seed variety.  In terms of strength, the Family Reserve is listed as medium-bodied.

The Fernando Leon Family Reserve Belicoso is easy on the eyes and sports a medium-brown wrapper.  There’s some oil on the surface, as well as a few very small veins.  An attractive band near the head displays the cigar’s moniker beneath a logo of a lion.  The band’s red, gold, and white color scheme stands out nicely as well.  I feel no soft spots, and see no major imperfections.  Before lighting, there’s a spicy cold taste and an aroma that’s sweet and chocolaty.

I have no complaints as far as the Family Reserve Belicoso’s burn is concerned.  The burn is even.  The draw is great.  Plenty of smoke is produced.  And no touch-ups or re-lights are needed.
