hoyoexcalibur1Welcome back cigar fans!  We hope you had a great holiday weekend.  Today we are getting back into the swing of things with cigar reviews of the Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur and the Siboney Reserve.

Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur Epicure

The Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur line comes to us via tobacco giant General Cigar.  The line has received some very favorable reviews from critics in the past and comes in two versions – Natural and Maduro.  I’ll be giving the Natural a try for this review, but I am thinking of trying the Maduro in the future as it is said to be more powerful and rich.

The Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur Epicure measures 5 1/4 x 50.  The cigar comes in a ton of other sizes as well, ranging from the tiny 3 x 22 Miniature all the way up to the large 8 1/2 x 52 Emperor.  The cigar’s filler is a blend of tobaccos from the Dominican Republic, Honduras, and Nicaragua.  The binder and wrapper are both of the Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade variety.  The Excalibur is described as being medium to full-bodied in strength and is produced in Danli, Honduras.

The appearance of the Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur Epicure is highlighted by its golden brown wrapper.  It has a nice oily sheen and some medium sized veins.  The band near the head adds to the appearance with its black, gold, and yellow colors.  It features the Hoyo de Monterrey logo along with the Excalibur name.  I can tell that the Epicure is packed solidly with tobacco as it has virtually no give as I squeeze it with my fingers.  Before lighting, the aroma and cold taste are a mix of tobacco and wood.

The burn of the Excalibur Epicure is not the greatest.  It lights easily and has a good draw but there are multiple touch-ups needed to keep the burn even.  Plenty of smoke is produced and the ash is white and sturdy.  Smoking time is just over an hour.
