Today’s cigar reviews will cover a pair of sticks from La Gloria Cubana’s Trunk Show 2013 line.  We’ll start off with a look at the Liga JD-05 and finish up with the Liga YG-23.

La Gloria Cubana Trunk Show 2013 Liga JD-05

To give you an idea of what La Gloria Cubana’s Trunk Show offerings are all about, I’ll let General Cigar’s creative director Michael Giannini explain the concept, since he’s the brains behind it all:

“Jhonys Diaz, Yuri Guillen and I are constantly experimenting with blends, most often working with tobacco from General Cigar’s extensive library. Many of these tobaccos are extremely rare and limited in quantity, which prohibits us from developing new collections with them. Instead, we are making these special blends available in small batches, to share with true cigar connoisseurs.”

Three Trunk Show offerings were put together for 2013, as opposed to the duo that was announced in 2012.  They were released in October, and the Liga JD-05 is one of them.  Master blender Jhonys Diaz is responsible for the blend which was limited to distribution via internet and catalog retailers.

The Trunk Show 2013 Liga JD-05 comes in one massive size that measures 7 ¼ x 62.  Tobaccos that have been aged three to nine years make up the cigar, and it is highlighted by a Sumatra Ligero wrapper.  The tobacco leaves were aged in tercios and bales to help enhance their complexity and flavor.

If I had to use one word to describe the appearance of the Trunk Show 2013 Liga JD-05, it would be huge.  Simply put, it’s one of the bigger cigars I’ve smoked.  It has a mottled dark brown wrapper that is oily and toothy with a few medium-sized veins.  A large band near the head displays the La Gloria Cubana name and logo as well as the Trunk Show 2013 moniker over a red, brown, and black color scheme.  The cigar is firm to the touch.  Prior to lighting there’s a sweet aroma and a cold taste of earth.

After lighting the Trunk Show 2013 Liga JD-05 with relative ease, I get a bit of a tight draw.  It loosens up though and becomes much more tolerable.  There’s a good amount of smoke, and the light gray ash is very sturdy.  The burn only requires a small touch-up and one re-light.  Smoking time is approximately one hour and a 45 minutes, so make sure you have plenty of time on your hands if you light this baby up.
