In terms of appearance, the Gold Label Duke of York gets a passing grade. The top band displays the Macanudo name and logo, while the one beneath it showcases the Gold Label moniker. Both of the bands come in a gold and white color scheme that matches the golden wrapper nicely. The wrapper is very smooth and only has a few minimal veins that are noticeable. The cigar appears to be packed full of tobacco and has no soft spots. The Gold Label is very smooth overall with superb construction. The cold taste is sweet, and so is the aroma.
After the Macanudo Gold Label lights with ease, it exhibits a solid overall burn. It stays even from beginning to end without the need for touch-ups or re-lights. The draw is just right, and the gray ash is solid. There is also a pleasant aroma emitted from the cigar.
As far as the Macanudo Gold Label’s flavor is concerned, there is not a lot of complexity to report. It is as smooth as advertised, however. The Duke of York begins with sweet and creamy notes that dominate the first third. The second third introduces some nuts that I would consider to be the highlight of the entire smoking experience. The final third is more of the same with sweet, creamy, and nutty notes once again. I’d consider the strength to be medium-bodied all the way.
Did the Macanudo Gold Label blow me away with greatness? No, but that does not mean it is not a solid cigar. It offers solid construction and smoothness that should appeal to beginners and fans of milder smokes. The flavors didn’t scream for my attention, but I cannot say that I really expected anything different. It’s not the cheapest cigar at $7 a pop, but you are getting a quality stick in return. The Gold Label Duke of York also comes in packs of five or boxes of 25.
The Macanudo Gold Label Duke of York earns a rating of 3.5 out of four stars.
