After getting some pretty heady reviews in a few of the other rags, we figured it was time to put this new entry in the market to test. After getting some pretty heady reviews in a few of the other rags, we figured it was time to put this new entry in the market to test. The Onyx Reserve line is part of the Altadis USA family of cigar brands that were acquired when Altidis purchased Consolidated cigars. The Onyx brand is made at the well-known Altadis La Romana factory in the Dominican Republic. Other brands such as the Dominican Montecristo, Romeo & Julieta, and Por Larranaga are also made at the La Romana factory. The Onyx Reserve cigars are made from a Connecticut Broadleaf maduro wrapper, Nicaraguan binder, and a blend of Dominican, Nicaraguan, and Peruvian long filler tobaccos. It's hard to question the look of the Onyx Reserve, as it glistens with shades of oil, and seems to have a solid well made look to it. Nobody went as far as classifying it as humidor candy, but there is surely nothing here to be ashamed of. Once you take the opportunity to cut and light the Onyx Reserve Mini Belicoso, you quickly realize it is packed full of tobacco. Some reviewers were a bit hesitant after seeing this, as they surely expected a tight draw. Those expectations materialized in the reviews of only two of our testers. After all the write-up this cigar had received in CA, we were excited when we approached the $64,000 question, and started reading what the reviewers were thinking about the taste and overall performance of the Onyx. The findings were interesting, but not completely unexpected. "I have had Onyx before, but never the reserve, so I wasn't expecting much when I lit this baby up. I was pleasantly surprised however to find that it was a rather enjoyable smoke." "From a taste standpoint, the bitterness up front was a negative. But things got better. After getting into the smoke a little, I was surprised by the huge dose of spiciness that emerged. At the midpoint, the bitterness made way for the heavy, dry, earthy flavor combined with a touch of power. The draw also improved towards the end. I started to enjoy this cigar as a powerful, full-bodied cigar. In the end, I could appreciate and enjoy the cigar’s taste, but wasn’t ready to buy a box, even though the price is right." "Maybe I'm jaded, but I don't know what they "reserve" this cigar for. It is no different than hundreds of other "slightly better than average" cigars on the market today. I don't know what CA was thinking...other than "advertising dollars". There are to many good cigars on the market for me to spend time on "slightly better than average". It seems the general consensus was that this was simply another cigar. Perhaps a tad bit on the strong side, but not over-whelming. Nobody went out of their way to rave about the Onyx Reserve, and we had no complete disappointments either. No "F" grades, no "A" grades. The descriptor "better than average" was frequently in use...and perhaps the most fitting. The Onyx Reserve line seem to be worth a try, especially if they can fit your flavor niche. Once you see the prices these are being sold for, you can afford to break up your routine and give the Onyx Reserve a chance to earn their way into your humidor.
