Onyx Reserve Robusto
The Onyx Reserve line is one from Altadis USA that has garnered solid reviews from critics since its release. It comes with a very dark wrapper and a box-pressed shape, and reportedly offers plenty of sweet and spicy notes. I am hoping that the Reserve’s high reviews come to life when I light up one of the line’s Robusto offerings. Enough with the intro, let’s get to it..
The Onyx Reserve Robusto measures 5 x 50. Other sizes in the line include the 5 x 44 No. 4, 5 x 52 Mini Belicoso, 5 1/2 x 60 Torbusto, 6 x 50 Toro, 6 1/8 x 52 No. 2 Belicoso, 6 5/8 x 44 Lonsdale, and the 7 x 50 Churchill. The Reserve’s filler is a blend of Dominican, Nicaraguan, and Peruvian tobaccos. The binder is Nicaraguan, and the wrapper is listed as being of the blackened Connecticut Broadleaf variety. The strength of the Onyx Reserve is generally described as medium to full-bodied.
Well, I can definitely say that the Onyx Reserve Robusto is one very dark cigar. The wrapper is almost black in color, and I notice some oil and medium-sized veins. The box-pressed shape looks nicely done, and feeling the cigar tells me that it is well-packed with tobacco. A black, gold, and white band near the head displays the Onyx name and really stands out against the dark wrapper. There’s a pre-light aroma that is spicy, while the cold taste is sweet.
The Onyx Reserve Robusto lights with relative ease and exhibits a burn that is a tad tight. The ash is on the flaky side and light gray in color. Only one touch-up is needed. Beyond that, the burn stays even on its own. No re-lights are necessary.
