If I had to use one word to describe the appearance of the El Baton Belicoso, it would be bold.  The cigar is large, in charge, and has a very dark wrapper that is oily as can be.  It’s also very smooth and free of almost any veins.  A large band near the head displays the El Baton name over a blue and gold color scheme.  The cigar is quite heavy and is firm to the touch.  Prior to lighting there’s a spicy aroma and a cold taste of coffee.

The El Baton Belicoso lights with ease and provides an excellent draw.  There’s plenty of thick and cool smoke, and solid ash that is gray in color is formed.  The burn stays even for the entire smoking experience and requires zero touch-ups.  No re-lights are needed either.

Since J.C. Newman lists the El Baton Belicoso as a full-bodied selection, I’m anticipating some power.  That power comes through, but in a good way, as the cigar is not overbearing in strength.  The first third is marked by pepper and some wood and leather.  The second third picks up in strength with the pepper but also introduces a tasty blend of coffee, sweet raisins, and chocolate.  The final third maintains the peppery flavor, along with more wood and coffee.

The El Baton Belicoso was definitely as good as advertised.  The cigar had a bold appearance, and that carried over to its superb flavor.  This is not a beginner’s cigar, but if you love Nicaraguan puros that are bold, the El Baton Belicoso is perfect for you.  A single falls in the $5 to $6 range, which seems fair for what you get in return.  You can also find it in packs of five or ten, or boxes of 40.  Pick up a box if you can manage, as this is a truly great cigar.

The El Baton Belicoso earns a rating of four out of four stars.
