One of a cigar smoker’s favorite experiences has to be when you go to the mailbox, and see that easily identifiable priority mail package that contains your cigar.  This is what happened to me a few weeks back when I opened up a priority mail package from Flatbed Cigar Company.  Since I wasn’t expecting anything, it made the feeling even better.

Flatbed Cigar Company is located in Bucks County Pennsylvania.  As indicated on their website, they were started with the following thought: “The idea was, if we have the best tobacco, the best rollers, make a bunch of blends, have lots of friends and colleagues sample the smokes...we should be able to find a profile or two to get behind. So, that is what we did. Those are the two blends we have available today; PANACEA Black - Natural and Maduro, and Panacea Red.   At Flatbed Cigar Company (owner/distributor of PANACEA) we are taking an Old-School approach to the cigar business. Right or wrong, it is the path we decided to take. The philosophy is: put all the money into tobacco. If we focus on making great cigars, they will sell themselves over time.”

The folks at Flatbed were kind enough to send me 5 Panacea Red Robusto Maduro’s.  The Panacea Red Maduro’s consist of A Brazilian Maduro wrapper with a Dominican Habano binder.  Designed to be a full bodied cigar with a medium/strong flavor profile, the folks at Flatbed want you to be able to enjoy the Panace Red robusto Maduro any time of the day.

One could suppose by the fact that I smoked my five samples in just under a week, that these are darn good cigars…one would suppose right.  The Robusto Maduro is a consistent looking cigar with an inviting semi-oily wrapper.  The construction is simple and solid…just one you should want.  Nothing fancy, no big tails, no bug bulge in the middle, not some squashed box pressed smoke, just a simple straightforward 5 x 50 Robusto.  It’s refreshing to see a new cigar that is not trying to make its way through marketing, but through solid tobacco and great construction.

The Brazilian wrapper imparts a nice sharp spice to the cigar, keeping you interested without forcing some flavor profile down your throat.  The whole cigar smokes with a fluid and simple experience.  A real refreshing cigar that is string, is bold, and is meaty, without being obnoxious, over powering, and simple strong for strengths sake.  The fact that you are delivered a semi complex cigar in a straight forward, and non overpowering way is truly enjoyable.  Now you are realizing why I went through 5 of these as quick as I did.

Touching back on the construction for a second, the Panacea Red Robusto Maduro never needs touching up or re-lighting.  It just stays lit, burns consistently, and offers up copious amounts of smoke.  I suggest you smoke a few of these before you claim to be able to completely decipher the flavor profile.  I thought I had it nailed, and had a different, enjoyable experience with each cigar I smoked.  I especially enjoyed them accompanied with a single malt scotch, a nice cabernet, or if you are a morning person, they go great with a stout coffee as well.

I have never seen Panacea for sale in any of my local cigar shops, but don’t fret, they are readily available on the web.  Flatbed Cigar Companys web site is easy to navigate, quick to navigate, and most importantly, loaded with Panacea Cigars.  Another beautiful aspect of this cigar experience is the price.  If I had purchased my cigars they would have cost me around $22 for a five pack.  I can’t think of many better cigars for well under 5 bucks a stick.

Make sure when you visit them you try out their other lines as well.  Panacea also makes the Panacea Black, the Black line is offered in either a Connecticut wrapped cigar or a Brazilian Maduro wrapped cigar.  The cigar differs from the Red line with a filler made from Cuban seed Seco & Ligero, Olor Dominicano, and Nicaraguan grown tobaccos.

I don’t think you can go wrong with anything from Flatbed Cigar Company.  They offer a similar experience from their cigars, to their website, to their customer service.  Simple and straight forward, no gimmicks, and definitely your money’s worth.  Panacea is worth supporting if for no other reason than they are not part of the “cigar machine”.  Finding a small company that cares about its cigars and its customers, and not just flash and cash is refreshing.  Light up a panacea!

I received an email yesterday from a customer who read this article. I am happy you enjoyed the cigars, and was pleased to hear (now see) you wrote about us. We are a 5 person cigar manufacturer producing quality cigars. We are also very sensitive to the economy and realize many cigar enthusiasts don't have unlimited funds, but still want to enjoy a great cigar. Our focus is on the tobacco. We make sure that is #1, and all else is secondary. We keep all other costs down, enabling us to produce a truly great cigar at a very reasonable price.

We are currently in 70 cigar stores, primarily in the North East. However, we are also in TX, TN, WI, and LA.

Thank you for your kind words.

Soon to be available in OR/WA as well. First shop will be Timber Valley Tobacco. If you're in the NW, start asking your tobacco shops for the Panacea cigars. I'll make sure they're available ASAP.
