Today's reviews concentrate on two smooth, medium-bodied cigars. We will begin by taking a look at the Alec Bradley SCR Corona and will finish up with the Davidoff Special R Tubo.
Alec Bradley SCR Corona
The Select Cabinet Reserve line from Alec Bradley shares some similarities with its very popular Tempus line. It follows the Tempus' lead in terms of some of its composition as well where it is made. The SCR was created for fans of smooth cigars, and is supposedly milder than the Tempus too.
The Select Cabinet Reserve Corona measures 5 ½ x 42. Alec Bradley also offers the line in the following sizes: the 5 x 50 Robusto, the 5 ½ x 60 Gran Robusto, the 6 1/8 x 52 Torpedo, and the 7 x 48 Churchill. The SCR's filler is a combination of tobaccos from Honduras and Nicaragua. It also has a double binder. One of the binders comes from the Trojes region of Honduras while the other is of the Indonesian Embertunada variety. While the double binder is a bit out of the ordinary, it can possibly add to the SCR's overall stability. The limited yield wrapper is also from the Trojes region. Those of you who have enjoyed Alec Bradley's popular Tempus line in the past may be pleased to know that the SCR has the same filler and binder, and it only differs in terms of its wrapper. The cigar is handmade in Honduras at the Fabrica de Tabacos Raices Cubanas factory. In terms of strength, the SCR is considered to be a smoother cigar that falls into the medium-bodied category.
The SCR Corona is an attractive cigar that features a medium-brown wrapper with a slightly oily sheen. There are several small veins present, and the cigar is more rough than smooth in terms of its overall look. A large decorative band near the head displays the Alec Bradley name as well as the SCR moniker. The red, silver, orange, and green colors on the band really beg for attention from the casual bystander. A smaller band resides at the foot. It has Select Cabinet Reserve stamped on it in red and silver. The SCR feels very firm to the touch, most likely due to its double binder. It also has a triple cap. Before lighting, the aroma and cold taste are both sweet.
