There's not much to comment on in terms of the Special R's appearance. Like most Davidoff selections, it has a light-brown wrapper that is inviting. The typical gold and white decorative band sits near the head, and it displays the Davidoff brand name in cursive font. There are some large veins present, and little oil. The cigar feels pretty firm to the touch and appears to be constructed well. Before striking it with a lighter, the cigar's cold taste hints of spice.
The burn is completely free of any negative marks. The draw is perfect. Long, light-colored ash stays on without falling frequently. The burn remains even on its own without the need for any touch-ups or re-lighting. To sum up the burn simply, it is maintenance-free.
There is not a whole lot of flavor to be had, but the Special R is definitely smooth. The cigar kicks off with some toasty notes. Leather appears next, and plenty of creaminess follows. The Special R seems to be medium-bodied to the core.
The Davidoff Special R is a good smoke, but it doesn't provide an amazing experience. It is well-constructed and burns perfectly, but the flavors are somewhat bland. There is not a ton of complexity to be enjoyed. If you want something that is smooth, however, the Special R may be what you are looking for. The cigar comes in tubes as packs of three or boxes of 20. A single retails for around $16, making the Special R a bit too pricey as an everyday smoke. If you are looking for something smooth and medium-bodied to have on a special occasion, however, the Special R may suffice.
The Davidoff Special R Tubo earns a rating of three out of four stars.
