ashtonvsg1 Today's reviews cover two excellent and flavorful cigars. We will first take a look at the popular Ashton VSG Eclipse, and cap things off with Gran Habano's new release: the Azteca Jaguar.

Ashton VSG Eclipse

The Ashton VSG, or Virgin Sun Grown line, is one that has received plenty of critical acclaim. It's said to come with loads of flavor and is made from special tobacco. Does its Eclipse vitola eclipse the competition? It's time to find out.

The VSG Eclipse measures 6 x 52. Ashton also offers the popular line in a ton of other sizes, some of which have names that sound like something out of a Lord of the Rings movie: the 4 3/8 x 44 Tres Mystique, the 4 3/8 x 60 Enchantment, the 5 1/4 x 52 Belicoso No. 1, the 5 1/2 x 50 Robusto, the 5 3/4 x 46 Corona Gorda, the 6 x 56 Wizard 37, the 6 1/2 x 44 Illusion, the 6 1/2 x 55 Torpedo, the 7 x 49 Sorceror, and the 7 1/2 x 54 Spellbound. The Eclipse's filler is made from Dominican tobacco that has been aged four to five years. Its binder is also Dominican. The Ecuadorian Sun-grown wrapper is the most distinct part of the cigar. It comes from a proprietary leaf that is grown especially for the VSG line on a private farm in Ecuador owned by the Oliva family. The special wrapper helps add plenty of flavor to the cigar, and its leaves are taken only from the highest primings of the tobacco plant. In terms of strength, the VSG is said to be medium to full-bodied.

The VSG Eclipse appears to be constructed with plenty of care and attention to detail. This can be determined after you take it out of its packaging, which includes a shiny aluminum black tube and a cedar sheath. The packaging is a nice touch and gives off the aura that you are about to smoke something special. The cigar itself has a chocolate brown wrapper that has an attractive oily sheen. There are very fine veins present, and the cigar feels very firm to the touch. A single large band sits near the head. It has a regal look with plenty of ornate decorations and graphics. The band displays the Ashton Virgin Sun Grown label and has a rich color scheme of black, gold, and red. Before lighting, the Eclipse has an inviting scent and cold taste of chocolate.
