At first glance the Criollo Commemorative's shape really catches the eye. Being box-pressed, it has a thick and square shape that ends with a tapered foot. It's certainly not the smoothest cigar you will find, either. Many veins are present on its oily surface, and it feels a bit lumpy, yet firm. The wrapper gives the cigar a pleasant medium-brown color. In contrast to the clunky shape, the band is more attractive. Reflecting Cupido's romance-related name, the band near the head of the cigar shows Cupid himself floating in the middle of a big red heart that is surrounded by an ornate gold and black design. While this band does make the cigar “prettier”, it could turn off the manly smoking types who prefer a more masculine stick. Then again, you can always just remove the band. Before lighting up, the cigar gives off a sweet scent and cold taste.
The burn of the Criollo Commemorative resembles its look; uneven. Keep your lighters handy, as you will most likely need to perform several touch-ups and the occasional re-light. However, the draw is good and it produces some nice ash. Luckily, the flavors experienced help elevate the smoking experience. There's plenty of nutty flavor, along with some cedar and pepper. Some coffee makes an appearance to lighten things up a bit, which eventually turns to more earthy and woody notes towards the end.
The Cupido Criollo Commemorative is a mixed bag. While it's far from pretty too look at and suffers from uneven burn issues, it does put out some good flavor. That said, considering its price of around $3 per single, it's a bit hard to complain totally. You can also find it in boxes of 25. Those who prefer medium-bodied smokes might enjoy it despite the burn issues. At the very worst, give it a try, and if you hate it, you aren't out much money. The Cupido Criollo Commemorative earns a rating of two out of four stars.
