Pete Johnson and Tatuaje did a great job of designing the look of The Face. Although the cigar may look bland, it does seem to exhibit a lot of character for some reason. The majority of that character comes from the band. The band is a small strip of Connecticut tobacco that is a lighter shade than the wrapper. It has no logo or labeling. It is quite visible, however, and Johnson stated that he went for that look to mimic Leatherface's use of a skin mask in the film. The wrapper has some oil on the surface, and its shade is similar to chocolate. There are some veins present, and it does have a rustic look. The cigar feels firm to the touch. Prior to lighting, it gives off a scent of tobacco and a cold taste that is earthy.
Although The Face looks rough, its burn is far from it. From beginning to end, the burn stays even without the need for touch-ups or any re-lighting. The draw is just right, and some solid gray ash is produced.
The flavors are a real surprise. There is plenty of complexity, and the cigar never gets dull. It begins with notes of earth and cedar, which later move into some spice. A rich chocolate flavor then comes into the picture, as do some tasty notes of leather and nuts. The cigar seems underwhelming at the start, but it progresses as becomes stronger as it burns.
The Face does not look pretty, but its a very enjoyable cigar. It's constructed well, lacks any burn issues, and has great flavor. It looks intimidating, but it never becomes too overbearing. It's also quite big, so if you do pick one up, and you should, make sure that you have plenty of free time to finish it. The Face is pricy, at around $15 per single. It's also pretty hard to find, given that it was released to a limited number of stores. Other than that, there are no negatives in terms of The Face.
The Face from Tatuaje earns a solid rating of 3.5 out of four stars.
