As far as looks go, the HL is very nice. The wrapper has an awesome, rich color. There is some oil that is visible as well. Very few veins are present, and it appears to be smooth overall. It does not seem to be lacking tobacco in any spots, and is firm to the touch. A simple band sits near the head. It shows the Illusione name and the HL label. The gold and white colors used for the band add a perfect touch to contrast the dark wrapper. The cigar also has a nice cap on it. Before lighting, there is an aroma and cold taste that resembles spice.

Once lit, the HL has a pretty good burn. The draw is a tad tight, but it does loosen up after a bit. Gray ash is formed that is flaky and has a hard time staying put. The burn stays even on its own, and there are no touch-ups or re-lights that are necessary.

In terms of flavor, the HL does not disappoint. The first notes are of light pepper, and a rich chocolate flavor makes an appearance next. There is also some dark coffee that is very enjoyable. Some wood notes make up the last noticeable flavor.

Overall, the HL seems to hold its own. It was impressive from the start with its beautiful construction and its eye-catching wrapper. The burn was not perfect, as the loose ash and tight draw showed themselves, but there were no overly negative issues that had to be dealt with. The flavors were varied and really kept the cigar from getting monotonous at any point in time. While its not an extreme powerhouse, the HL is probably too strong for beginners. Experienced smokers that enjoy Nicaraguan cigars packed with flavor should find it to be right up their alley. Price-wise, the HL checks in at about $9 per single. It is also available in packs of five or boxes of 25. Nine bucks a pop is not cheap. You are getting a quality cigar, however. At that price point, if hesitant, you should at least pick up a single if you are looking for a new full-bodied cigar to fill your time.

The Illusione HL earns a solid rating of three out of four stars.
