Padron Delicias Maduro

We just finished reviewing the Padron's 2000 Maduro Robusto, and saw that it was a perfect example of how you cannot always judge a book by its cover. Although the cigar did not offer much in terms of looks, its flavors were excellent. It seems as if the same might be true about another offering from Padron called the Delicias Maduro. Is it surprisingly good, or does it match its underwhelming appearance? It's time to light it up and find out.

The Delicias Maduro measures 4 7/8x 46. As far as composition goes, the Delicias' filler, binder, and wrapper are all Nicaraguan. In addition to the Delicias Maduro, Padron also offers the cigar in a Natural version. Manufacturing takes place in Esteli, Nicaragua, and the cigar is said to fall in between the medium and full-bodied categories.

The look of this cigar is quite rough. It has a box-pressed shape and there are many veins that are visible. The wrapper is dark brown and has a fair amount of oil on the surface. There is a single decorative band near the head that is as simple as they come. The band has a white and brown color scheme with Padron and handmade printed in a simple font. If you are the type that tends to be attracted by very smooth cigars with flashy bands, the Delicias Maduro will probably not catch your eye. Feeling the cigar reveals that it is well-packed, but not too firm. Prior to lighting, it has an earthy scent and a bit of a chocolatey cold taste.

Although it looks rough at first glance, the Delicias Maduro's burn is a whole other story, as it is as smooth as one could expect. The draw is excellent, and light-colored solid ash is produced. The burn stays even until the end on its own too, and there is no need for any re-lighting either. This is one stick that is virtually maintenance-free.
