The cigar's Brazilian wrapper is dark and oily. As is the case with many Gurkha releases, the Assassin is decorated by a couple of lavish bands. The top band displays the Gurkha name and logo with rich gold accents. The bottom band has the Gurkha Assassin moniker stamped on it in red, gold, and black. The combination of the bands, the dark wrapper, and the Assassin name give this cigar an intimidating aura. There are a few prominent veins that are visible, but no real wrapper defects that are troubling. The Assassin feels firm to the touch but not rock hard, as it does have a little give to it. The pre-light aroma and cold taste are spicy.
Gurkha markets itself as a premium brand, so it's no surprise that the Assassin Toro smokes like a champ. The burn stays even on its own until the very end. Touch-ups are not needed, and the same holds true for any re-lighting. Solid gray ash is produced and the draw is about as perfect as you could hope for.
If you like your cigars spicy and bold, the Assassin will not disappoint. Bold spice is the most dominant flavor from start to finish. In between the spicy dominance there is some sweetness, and there is also a very rich chocolate flavor that adds a nice change of pace.
Needless to say, the strength of the Assassin will be too much for beginners or fans of milder smokes to handle. Full-bodied fans and experienced smokers could see its strength claims as a challenge and find it to be more up to their speed. Gurkha usually offers some very expensive cigars, but the Assassin Toro is pretty affordable. A single is around $7, but you can find it for less than that if you buy a pack of five or a box of 20.
The Gurkha Assassin Toro earns a rating of three out of four stars.
