gurkhagrand2

As with many other Gurkha selections, the Grand Age looks great. It appears to be extremely smooth with a few fine veins present. The wrapper has a rich, dark brown color with not much of an oily sheen. The cigar appears to be well-packed with tobacco and is firm to the touch. There are two decorative bands that really spruce up the appearance. The band near the head is large and features the Gurkha logo in a brown and copper color scheme. The band beneath it is small with a black and gold color scheme that reveals the Grand Age label. Prior to lighting, the cigar has a grassy flavor.

Once in action, the Grand Age burns well for the most part. The draw is just right, and it forms solid ash that is light in color. The burn does appear as if it wants to get uneven, but it does correct itself. There is no re-lighting necessary.

The flavors packed into the Grand Age are not bad, but they lack complexity. There is a strong cinnamon flavor that is noticed first. Some cedar and leather notes also appear, as well as a toasty flavor that adds a nice touch.

Overall, the Grand Age is a slight disappointment, mostly due to the lack of complexity. Perhaps the look of the cigar and seeing how good the boxes looked created too much anticipation prior to lighting it up. That's not to say that it is not a quality cigar, because it is. At a price of $11 per single, however, it just does not stand out enough to warrant another purchase. Gurkha fans may want to give it a shot, or those looking for something to smoke on a special occasion. As mentioned before, the packaging seems to really sell the Grand Age more than the smoke itself.

The Gurkha Grand Age receives a rating of 2.5 out of four stars.
