Should you use a cigar punch to get your stogie ready, or is a cutter better?  Is there any difference?  This quick guide will fill you in.

Perhaps one of the best aspects of cigar smoking as a hobby is that there’s never a shortage of topics to discuss.  As with most hobbies, everyone has their personal preferences when it comes to smoking cigars, so you can have some pretty good debates across the board.  Debates such as whether or not you should keep the cellophane on a cigar when it’s in your humidor.  Are bigger cigars necessarily better?  Is a homemade coolidor a better option than a store bought humidor?  And so on.

Which brings me to today’s debate: cigar punch versus cutter.  Which is better, or is one option even more advantageous than the other?  There’s two sides to every story, and this quick little breakdown of a guide will attempt to show you both sides of the equation so that you can decide which option is better for you when you’re ready to prep your stogie for smoking.  Of course, this debate is just like the others amongst cigar smokers in the way that there truly is no right or wrong answer.  In the end, it all comes down to personal preference.  With that out of the way, let’s start by looking at the cigar punch as a prepping option.

Cigar punch

Just like its name suggests, the cigar punch is a tool that basically allows you to punch a small hole into the cap of the cigar.  If you’ve never seen the end result before, think of an office hole punch that’s used to make holes in sheets of paper so that they can be clipped together in a folder.  The cigar punch obviously doesn’t come in that format.  Instead, you take the small top of the punch and “screw” it into the top of the cigar until the small piece of tobacco is removed.
