In terms of looks, the Cojonu 2012 Capa Especial is aesthetically pleasing. The chocolate brown wrapper is inviting and has some oil and a few veins that are visible. Both the cigar’s cap and its box-pressed shape appear to be executed perfectly. I detect no soft spots as I give the Capa Especial a feel. It has two decorative bands. The top band is the standard Tatuaje band that features the brand name over a brown and white color scheme. The band beneath it is white and gold in color and showcases the Cojonu 2012 name. The other two selections in the Cojonu family for this year can be told apart from the Capa Especial by their different color bands to keep you from getting confused if you have all three in your possession. I sense some cedar flavor prior to lighting. The aroma is very pleasant and sweet.
Once lit, the Tatuaje Cojonu 2012 Capa Especial offers up a good draw and a ton of thick smoke. The firm gray ash exceeds an inch in length, and the burn is about as razor sharp as you could ever expect from a cigar. It remains that way throughout the experience, requiring no touch-ups.
The first third of the Cojonu 2012 Capa Especial starts off with a nice mix of pepper and sweetness. I also notice a bit of wood towards the end of the first third. The second third showcases stronger pepper and we reach the full-bodied mark here. Earth, chocolate, and leather also enter into the equation. The final third omits pepper and supplies more chocolate and leather, plus some nuts.
At the end of the day, the Cojonu 2012 Capa Especial is a great cigar. I wouldn’t call it as strong as the Reserva, but it does pack its own punch. I love its complexity as well. I would definitely recommend the Capa Especial to experienced smokers seeking something flavorful and full-bodied. A single sells in the $13 range, and you can also find it in boxes of 25. If you can afford to splurge, go ahead and pick up a box.
The Tatuaje Cojonu 2012 Capa Especial earns a rating of 3.75 out of four stars.
