I get a solid first impression from looking at the Asylum Torpedo. The decorative band gives the cigar an edgy look with its dark colors and the Asylum name and logo that features a big skull in the middle. The cigar itself looks appetizing thanks to its oily chocolate brown wrapper. There are a few fine veins and the Torpedo looks smooth overall. It also feels firm to the touch. There’s a sweet aroma prior to lighting and the cold taste is of mild tobacco.
I light the Asylum Torpedo with ease and get an excellent draw. A ton of smoke is produced and the ash is solid and light gray in color. The burn is even for the most part and only requires a couple of touch-ups. No re-lights are needed.
Now let’s get into the juicy part of the Asylum Torpedo – its flavor. The cigar begins with a nice mix of sweetness, wood, and earth in the first third. The sweetness continues into the second third and a good amount of potent spice comes into the equation. Chocolate is also noted here. The spice dies down a bit in the final third and gives way to more chocolate and coffee. Overall, I’d call the strength medium to full-bodied.
Asylum has made a positive impression with both of the lines that I have reviewed this month. I think I prefer the 13 over this Torpedo, but both are worthy of a purchase. The Asylum Torpedo is a good choice if you enjoy Nicaraguan puros and are seeking something flavorful. A single costs $6, which is not bad at all. You can also find the Torpedo in packs of five or boxes of 25.
The Asylum Torpedo earns a rating of 3.5 out of four stars.
