Another week is upon us and we are kicking it off with two new reviews. Up first is a closer look at the Viaje Platino Lancero. Wrapping things up is a sampling of the recently released Punch Rare Corojo 10th Anniversary.
Viaje Platino Lancero
I haven't had much experience with cigars from Viaje, so you could say that the Platino Lancero I am about to try is a new adventure. Will Viaje earn a new fan? There's only one way to find out.
The Viaje Platino Lancero measures 7 1/2 x 38. The Platino line also comes in the following sizes: the 5 x 52 Chiva, 5 3/4 x 44 Fino, 6 x 52 Belicoso, 6 x 54 Sueno, 7 x 50 Jefe, and 6 x 50 VPR #6. The cigar is a Nicaraguan puro, made completely of tobacco from the fertile Central American nation. The filler is made up of grade A Cuban Seed long leaf tobaccos, and it is concealed by two binders. Completing the cigar is a Corojo 99 wrapper, as well as a Cuban triple cap. The Platino line is listed as being medium-bodied.
Viaje definitely put out a good looking stick with the Platino Lancero. It has a dark and oily wrapper. Hardly any veins are visible to the naked eye. The elegant Lancero shape is one of my favorites, and it is executed to perfection here. At the foot of the cigar is a silver band that adds a nice touch to the overall look. The band near the head is attractive and displays the Viaje logo in white, green, and silver. The Cuban triple cap is flawless, and feeling the cigar reveals that it is well-packed with tobacco. There are zero soft spots. As for the pre-light aroma, I detect some spice. The cold taste, on the other hand, is of coffee.
As good as the Viaje Platino Lancero looks, it burns even better. The draw is perfect. The ash is white and solid. The burn requires no touch-ups. The only issue to contend with is that the cigar needs one re-light. Overall, the construction is impressive.
