The IPCPR is the International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers Association. Their annual trade show is the granddaddy of cigar trade shows where most of the new products are introduced for the year. This was the 77th show and Puff was there.

New Orleans, sadly, in spite of the New Orleans Convention Center’s desire to have the IPCPR there (and they signed up for two years), there were unnecessary and annoying impediments to smoking. The exhibitors couldn’t smoke when setting up (Saturday, August 8th) and when dismantling (Wednesday, August 12th after 1:00 PM); nor could you leave the Exhibit Hall and cross the lobby, to exit the building, with a lighted cigar! Does anyone else hear the sound of jackboots hitting the pavement?

It’s not that long since we experienced what many here in the United States refer to as the boom time in cigars. That period of growth for the cigar industry saw the appearance of a large number of new manufacturers who wanted to take on the world, but sadly most of them failed to survive and few would even remember their names these days.

You just know things are getting harder when smoking a cigar in a public place has been banned in the very heart of cigar country, and that’s what happened four years ago in Cuba. While it may not be that difficult here in the United States just yet, our freedom to smoke in a public place - or just about any place for that matter - is slowly being whittled away.
