Now that you’re on your way to being a sophisticated, urbane cigar aficionado, there are still a few newbie mistakes you need to watch out for. Also, as your cigar collection grows, you’ll need a humidor to keep all those smokes fresh. This week, we’ll tell you how to choose the perfect one for your needs.

First, we’ll look at some of the faux pas frequently made by novice cigar smokers. Avoid these mistakes and you can pass as a true cigar lover while learning the ropes.

Don’t start too small. Too many new smokers try the smaller, shorter, thinner cigars first. The problem is that the shorter the cigar, the closer the hot end is to your mouth, making it get hotter faster. This is not a good thing when you’re just getting used to smoking cigars. Nothing says “newbie” like coughing and gasping for air after a couple of puffs. Choose a long, fat, mild cigar for a cooler smoking experience.

Don’t forget to cut your cigar. All hand-rolled cigars are closed with a cap to keep the tobaccos inside. There are many ways to cut off the cap, but the easiest is to make a straight cut with a guillotine cutter. Don’t cut off too much of the cap, just the tip.

While butane lighters and plain old-fashioned matches are fine for lighting your cigar, a Zippo isn’t because it will introduce foreign substances into the cigar. Why ruin a fine, expensive cigar with lighter fluid smell?

Don’t inhale. Cigar smoking is all about appreciating the flavor, and to do this, you need to master the art of drawing and expelling without inhaling and exhaling. Obviously, this takes practice, which is why you should relax and take it slowly. Let the smoke swirl around your mouth to get the full experience. Practice makes perfect!

Don’t smoke too fast. Experienced smokers quip that cigars are meant to be sipped, not chugged. Try taking a hit every 20-30 seconds. Relax and take it easy.
