The biggest news of the week is the imminent opening of a fabulous new cigar lounge in the Washington, DC area, but we also have an update on the “Cigar Marine” and news about this year’s IPCPR trade show.
“Cigar Marine” Writes Book of Advice for Recruits
Ten years after being immortalized in a photo that caught him at the helm of a tank in Iraq with cigar in hand, Retired Gunnery Sgt. Nick Popaditch is still known as the “Cigar Marine.” Since retiring, he’s been busy with several projects, including a new book.
In November, Popaditch launched his own line of premium cigars with profits going to the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund. He’s run for Congress twice in Southern California, written a memoir entitled “Once a Marine” back in 2008 and now has a new book coming out called “The Ultimate Marine Recruit Training Guidebook.”
The 178-page book uses Popoditch’s experiences as a boot and a drill instructor to instill enthusiasm for the Marine Corps in high school students who are considering a career in the military.

Here’s a bit of advice from the book: “Engage all your senses to obtain and process information; look at (but not directly — use your peripheral vision) posted signs; observe the Drill Instructor’s hand and arm motions; and feel the direction the rest of the group is moving. Calm down. Consciously control your breathing to slow your heart rate; focus on thinking clearly.”
While the book alone is available for $18.95 at the usual booksellers, you can get
"The Gunny" Bundle Pack for $130 at artofcigars.com. This special package includes a signed humidor, five "The Gunny" cigars and “The Ultimate Marine Recruit Training Guidebook” with a signed bookplate.
