Cigars Can Have Health Benefits

We’re constantly being bombarded with dire warnings about how smoking tobacco in any form is disastrous for your health, but one cigar lover claims he’s seen benefits resulting from his habit.

Luke Russell, an owner of the Titletown Tobacco shop in Green Bay, Wisconsin, feels that smoking a few cigars over the week has taught him to relax, which in turn has lowered his blood pressure and improved both his mental and physical health.

Russell laments, “People are pushed from all directions and rush from one thing to another without ever taking the time to slow down." He adds another benefit of smoking: “There’s nothing better to keep the mosquitoes away while golfing than the billowing smoke of a good cigar."

Dr. William Douglass is the author of “The Health Benefits of Tobacco: A Smoker’s Paradox,” in which he details how casual smokers can benefit from tobacco’s medicinal properties and even stave off diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Tourette’s Syndrome.

According to Dr. Douglass, “Nicotine can boost stem cell regenerative power in patients with chronic or congestive heart failure."

Whether or not there are real, documented health benefits from cigar smoking is debatable, but it’s certain that smokers gain relaxation and pleasure from the habit. A Russell says, “I'll take the chance for all of the benefits. So slow down, take time and enjoy a fine cigar with a good friend. You’ll be glad you did. After all, Its for your health!"

IPCPR Considering Consumer Day

Cigar lovers who’ve yearned to attend the annual IPCPR trade show may have their wishes granted soon. A few days ago, IPCPR Board Trade Show Committee chairman John Anderson sent an email to members of the organization concerning changes being planned for the event.

“In an effort to raise funds for our continued and ever more expensive legislative battles, the IPCPR Board Trade Show Committee is planning two events to take place at the 2013 annual Trade Show in Las Vegas.

“The first event under consideration is a Consumer Day that will take place on the last half-day of the show.”

Here are the details on Consumer Day: “The goal of the event is to generate $100,000 for our legislative battles. Each ticket will include a pre-packaged assortment of select cigars purchased by the IPCPR from volunteer manufacturers, as well as a chance to walk the Trade Show floor to meet and interface with the individuals behind the brands in the industry. This event will be limited to the first 500 consumers who purchase tickets (ticket price TBD based on cigar selections & cost).”

This is a major change of direction for this organization of tobacco retailer, but one that’s easy to understand. The IPCPR is going to need a major infusion of funds to fight the increase in government regulation of premium cigars expected this year.
