Friends Gather at Burke Cigar & Lounge

Every community should have a spot where cigar lovers can go to relax with a fine smoke and enjoy the company of friends. That’s just what you’ll find at Burke Cigar & Lounge in Burke, VA.

Owner Shami Walia, an immigrant from India who has owned the shop for five years, explains his store’s appeal. “I started smoking cigars as a casual hobby. The previous owner was a good friend of mine. I like to think we have a very nice social atmosphere. There’s a lot of camaraderie among our customers.”

Regulars agree, like retired military man Rafael Gutierrez, who joked, “We like to call it day care.”

Another regular, Tim Jeter, commented, “This is place where everybody knows your name, or nickname, where we solve the world’s problem,” adding that politicians could learn from a visit to Burke’s. “If they just came here, we could tell them how to fix the economy. This is a place full of problem-solvers.”

Burke’s has everything a cigar lover could want, including hundreds of cigars, plus hookahs, pipes and accessories. Smokers can light up their purchases in the unique Shami’s Smoking Lounge.

For added comfort, Burke’s offers leather club chairs, humidifier lockers, a flat-screen TV and WiFi.

Burke’s Cigar & Lounge is located at 9558 Old Keene Mill Road in Burke, VA.

Famous Cuban Cigar Roller Honored

As part of the Clients and Friends of the House of Partegas event in late November, 300 attendees from 18 nations paid tribute to Cuban cigar roller Castelar Cairo (Cueto), who won the Habano of the Year Award for 2012.

Cueto has been rolling cigars for 52 of his 68 years and has won five London Guiness records, including a 2001 nod for the longest cigar, 11.04 meters long. He bested that record in 2011 with a monster cigar measuring 81.80 meters long.

Schwab’s Serves the Serious Smoker in Lexington

Schwab’s Pipes n’ Stuff was founded by Paul Schwab, a guy who loved his smokes so much that he was rarely seen without his trademark pipe in his hand. Now he’s gone, but his shop is in the capable hands of his widow Pat Schwab and their son Jeff.

Business has been so brisk that the shop has relocated from the Woodland Shopping Center to a building of its own on Southland Drive in the Lexington area. A free-standing building is important when your business includes a smoking lounge, and you don’t want close neighbors who complain about the smoke.

Jeff Schwab explained, “If you're next to a candy store, you're going to smell candy; if you're next to a tobacconist, you're going to smell tobacco. We love our new neighborhood.”

While his father favored pipes, Jeff is a cigar connoisseur who strives to bring the best products available to his customers. The Schwabs have made trips to Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic, to visit where the finest cigars are made.

Schwab’s is a family business, and they appreciate that the cigar makers share a similar tradition. As Pat Schwab put it, “We know the owners. They all started from family businesses.”

Schwab’s Pipes n’ Stuff is located at 245 South Land Drive, Washington, KY.
