Cigar Industry Set to Show Off at IPCPR Show

Consumers are not allowed at the annual International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers Association trade show, but there’s sure to be plenty of news for smokers coming out of this event. This year’s show kicks off on August 2 in Orlando, LF, and is shaping up to be the biggest ever.

The show has grown from a mere 247 booths on 1992 to 1,361 this year. Vendors hosting booths include A Fuente, Colibri, Davidoff, General Cigar Company, La Aurora/Miami Cigar, Oliva Cigar Company, Padron Cigars and Rocky Patel.

One topic of conversation sure to pop up at this year’s show is the looming threat of regulation of premium cigars by the FDA. If this government agency is allowed to regulate cigars the way it does cigarettes, the way cigars are made and sold could be drastically affected.

For instance, more legislation could force cigar makers to give up limited editions and just focus on large runs. But for now, look for new cigars as well as other products at the IPCPR show.

Mobile Cigar Lounge Launches in PA

Why don’t we have a chain of these things? A couple in Moore Township, PA, has launched Street Car Cigars, a cigar lounge on wheels that can be rented out for tailgate parties and other events.

Ron and Wendy Reidi hatched the idea for Street Car Cigars after hearing about a similar project in Tampa Bay, then spent a year tricking out a 1973 Airstream with cushy leather seats, flat-screen TVs, a built-in entertainment center and twin humidors. The result seats about a dozen and is available for rental by the hour. Cigars can be purchased at the lounge, but BYOB. For more details, go to the Street Car Cigars website:

New Cigar Lounge Coming to Downtown Bellflower

Like many urban areas, downtown Bellflower, CA, tends to roll up the sidewalks after office hours, but that’s likely to change with the opening of the Cigar Lounge on Oak Street.

The lounge being built by Satlon Inc. of Long Beach will provide a comfy area where customers can enjoy a cigar while reading or watching TV. So far, there are no plans for dining, but beer and wine will be available for purchase by smokers.

Mayor Dan Koops hopes this is a step in revitalizing the downtown area and encouraging more nightlife. “We are going to a place we haven’t been,” he said, adding that “downtown Bellflower closes at 7 p.m.”

Habana Premium Cigar Shoppe to Host Party for Luis Tiant

If your idea of heaven is enjoying a fine cigar while sipping a delicious cocktail and conversing with a professional athlete, then you should plan to be in Albany, NY, on the evening of July 23.

That’s when the Habana Premium Cigar Shoppe will be hosting a cocktail party and cigar dinner that will offer decadently luxurious food and the finest cigars, plus the chance to hang out with former Boston Red Sox pitcher Luis Tiant.

The event will take place from 7-10 p.m. July 23 at the Century House in Latham, NY. Tickets are $100 and include five premium cigars from Taint’s personal brand, El Tiante, from My Father Cigars.

Cuban native Tiant was noted for his cigar smoking as a player, so what could be more natural than going into the cigar business after he retired from baseball? In 2005, Tiant started the Tiant Cigar Group with his son Daniel, and later partnered with Jaime Garcia of My Father Cigars to repackage and re-blend his El Tiante brand.

Habana Premium Cigar Shoppe owner Scott Bendett, stated, “I’m thrilled to have this event with a baseball legend. I’m a huge baseball fan and it’s an honor for me to have him present for this event. I also personally enjoy his cigar, and the new blend has become a favorite among our customers. When you add in all the top-shelf food and drinks, I think this is going to be one of our best events of the year. Sometimes we have events that people miss out on and regret it, and I’m sure this will be one like that. It’s going to be an intimate gathering, the setting couldn’t be better, and it’s going to be a very special evening for everyone who attends.”
