sxyleadThis week, we look at a veteran crafter who takes pride in his work, another cigar maker who’s getting his close-up and a group of very attractive cigar rollers who are taking over the world.

The Cigar Dolls Go International

In an earlier column, we introduced you to one of the Cigar Dolls, the group of alluring cigar rollers who have been impressing party goers with their expertise, among other things. Now the lovely and talented troupe will be taking their talents to events all over the globe.

Until now, the Cigar Dolls have been available for events in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Boston, New York, Miami and Orlando, but now these amazing ladies are breaking out worldwide, with appearances already scheduled for Spain, Italy and Canada.

Some of the more popular Dolls are Boston-based Ana Perez, Lupita in Los Angeles and Mia in South Beach. A merchandising program is currently in full swing, with posters now available and other items like coffee mugs to follow.

Who doesn’t love watching a beautiful lady roll a mean cigar? That’s why the tagline for the Cigar Dolls is “Your guests will never expect them, or forget them.”

Four Kicks Debuts Limited Edition Mule Kick Cigar

When stuck with supplies that don’t work for your regular products, what can a manufacturer do? In the case of the makers of Four Kicks cigars, you create a new line that takes advantage of them.

On being faced with a batch of wrapper too dark for the regular line of Four Kicks,
cigar maker Ernesto Perez-Carrillo came up with a stronger, darker smoke he dubbed Mule Kick.

The Four Kicks Mule Kick Limited Edition 2012 will come in boxes of ten selling for $8.95 and should hit stores in early November.

Casa Fuente Introduces New Exclusive Cigar

What could make a cigar like the Casa Fuente Opus X even better? How about a Cameroon wrapper holding a new blend of tobaccos?

The Casa Fuente 800 series cigars all feature a wrapper of Havana-seed sun-grown Rosado along with a full-bodied blend of tobaccos flavored with an intriguing mix of nutmeg, molasses, leather, wood, clove and earth.

The new cigars come in three sizes, the 806 robusto (5.25 x 52), the 807 double robusto (5.75 x 52), and the 808 toro (6 x 54). Prices are $21, $22 and $24 each.

NYC Cigar Shop is Subject of New Documentary

Filmmaker Keith “keef” Ehrlich spotlights artisanal and independent businesses in New York and Brooklyn for his “Made by Hand” series. The fourth episode looks at the Martinez Cigar Factory and its owner, Jesus Martinez.

Since 1974, Martinez has been rolling cigars by hand at this friendly neighborhood store at 171 W. 29th St., where people can grab a smoke or just hang out.

Ehrlich explained how he came to chose this location for his series: “I was on my way to my editor’s office and just strolled by the place. I noticed the neon sign that read ‘hand made cigars.’ So I took a look into the shop window and noticed three guys rolling cigars while other people were just hanging out shooting the shit -- I walked in and introduced myself.

“I mentioned the Made by Hand project and came back the next weekend to let them know I was for real. I hung out for an hour or so smoking with them (I’m not a smoker) to get a better sense of what the place was about. I had been wanting to find a topic that was more about friendship and community, and also was interested to do a film that would make the series more ethnically diverse. It was perfect. We scheduled shooting dates and that was it.”

The “Made by Hand” series airs on the Atlantic Video channel. For more info on the Martinez Cigar Factory, go to
