Movie – Cigars: The Heart and Soul of Cuba

Movies about cigars aren’t exactly in abundance, so when one is finally released, it’s great news for fans of the hobby. A recently released documentary on the subject dubbed Cigars: The Heart and Soul of Cuba takes a behind the scenes look at the nation’s well-known cigar trade from all angles, and is now available for download to cigar fans across the world.

Cigars: The Heart and Soul of Cuba was written and directed by James Orr, a Canadian writer, director, and producer whose credits include Three Men and a Baby, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, and Mr. Destiny, just to name a few. Orr teamed up with James Suckling, an influential wine and cigar critic who began traveling to Cuba in the 1990’s on a frequent basis as Cigar Aficionado’s European editor, as well as to produce content for his own site,

While Suckling’s trips over the years consisted of various visits to tobacco plantations, factories, and cigar shops, his time in Cuba for the purpose of the film was geared towards explaining why Cuban cigars are considered to be the best the world has to offer. He does this as the host through the 53-minute documentary where the entire cigar making process is shown from start to finish. Along the way, viewers get to take an exclusive look at where the cigars are made and who are the highly skilled people responsible for their production.

Cigars: The Heart and Soul of Cuba made a splash when it screened at Havana’s XXXIII Festival del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano in early December. Cuba’s very own audiences have praised the documentary, as have many who have seen it in Canada, China, Mexico, and the United Kingdom. If you’d like to see it for yourself, the film is now available for purchase as a DVD or digital download. For more information on how to get your hands on a copy, visit
